Bai Ngu is one of the places closely associated with the history of Tho Chu Island. According to local accounts, Nguyen Anh once took refuge here during his years of exile. After he ascended the throne, the local people named this area Bai Ngu to commemorate that historical connection.
Together with Bai Dong, Bai Ngu plays an important role in the daily life and economic activities of Tho Chu’s residents. Following the seasonal monsoon patterns, during the northeast monsoon, fishing boats usually return to anchor at Bai Ngu, where the terrain is more sheltered and suitable for living and trading. When the southwest monsoon arrives, boats move to Bai Dong, bringing with them a flexible shift in service activities across the island.
Today, Bai Ngu is the most densely populated and stable residential area on Tho Chu Island. Permanent houses, local markets, shops, and food services have gradually formed, creating a lively yet convenient atmosphere for both islanders and vessels operating in the area.
Notably, Bai Ngu is also home to Bai Ngu Port, a large-scale fisheries logistics harbor developed with an investment of approximately VND 150 billion. In recent years, as infrastructure has improved, the number of visitors traveling from the mainland to Tho Chu has increased. As a result, tourism-related services such as guesthouses, restaurants, cafés, grocery stores, and seafood processing facilities have emerged, turning Bai Ngu into the main center of daily life, trade, and tourism on Tho Chu Island.
