Bodhidiparama Khmer Pagoda – The First Khmer Theravada Temple in Phu Quoc

Bodhidiparama Pagoda (also known as Bodhidiparama Koh Trol) is located in Duong To Commune, Duong Bao Hamlet, with a total planned area of 6,000 m². This is the first Khmer Theravada Buddhist temple officially established in Phu Quoc under Decision No. 1159/QĐ-UBND dated May 26, 2011.

The pagoda is currently under construction, beginning from the foundation stage on the hillside known locally as Doc Quy. Temporary worship spaces have been set up so that Khmer monks and lay Buddhists can continue their spiritual practice during the building process.

The temple is led by Most Venerable Thich Tran Phuong – Member of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Council and Deputy Head of the Phu Quoc Buddhist Administration Board. On May 5, 2013, the groundbreaking ceremony and “First Stone Laying” for the main hall were formally held with the participation of the Buddhist Sangha and local authorities.

When completed, the pagoda will include:

  • Main Hall (Ubosot)
  • Sala (Dharma Hall)
  • Monks’ Residence
  • Khmer Language Classroom
  • Additional functional structures

The entire project is planned with an estimated investment of 49 billion VND, including 18 billion VND for the main hall alone.

More than a religious site, Bodhidiparama Pagoda represents the cultural identity and spiritual heritage of Khmer Theravada Buddhism on Phu Quoc. Once completed, it will become a meaningful spiritual landmark, supporting local Khmer communities while offering visitors a unique cultural and religious experience on the Pearl Island.
