Cam Mountain – The Highest Peak of Phu Quy Island

Cam Mountain, standing 108 meters above sea level, is the highest peak on Phu Quy Island and the site of the island’s lighthouse, built in 1996. The lighthouse tower is 28 meters tall and plays an essential role in guiding vessels navigating the surrounding waters.

A Scenic and Easy Climb

Travelers can ride a motorbike to the foot of the mountain and leave it there without worry—an example of the island’s peaceful and honest lifestyle.
A stone staircase of around 120 natural rock steps leads to the summit, with several stone benches placed along the path for resting.

The Phu Quy Lighthouse

The island’s first lighthouse existed during the French colonial era but was located elsewhere. The present Phu Quy Lighthouse was built in 1997, and the lighthouse keeper has been stationed here ever since, except for four years of temporary relocation.

Although one of the newest among Vietnam’s 92 lighthouses stretching from north to south, Phu Quy Lighthouse is also one of the most powerful.

  • Light range: 20 nautical miles (nearly 40 km)
  • Geographical visibility: 28 nautical miles
  • Tower height: 18 m
  • Coordinates: 10°32’05” N, 108°55’07” E

The lighthouse operates entirely on solar power through a system of 24 batteries. It is fully automated—the light turns on when natural light weakens and rotates continuously throughout the night.

Breathtaking Views From the Summit

The main beacon is housed inside a two-meter reinforced glass enclosure at the top of the tower, while a smaller auxiliary beacon sits on the lower terrace. Standing on the tower, you can feel the powerful island winds—sometimes so strong they seem capable of lifting you off your feet.

From the summit of Cam Mountain and the lighthouse platform, visitors can enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of Phu Quy Island:

  • scattered fishing boats dotting the vast blue sea
  • pristine beaches and rocky shores
  • village homes and local temples
  • rolling volcanic hills
  • the impressive Phu Quy wind farm with its white turbine blades turning proudly in the ocean breeze

The view is captivating, especially during sunrise and sunset, making Cam Mountain one of the most unforgettable stops for any traveler exploring Phu Quy Island.
