The Dinh Cau Festival is the traditional Ky Yen ceremony of Phu Quoc’s fishing communities, held annually on the 15th day of the 10th lunar month at the sacred Dinh Cau Shrine. For generations, this ceremony has been one of the island’s most important spiritual events, where locals gather to pray for calm seas, safe voyages, and an abundant fishing season. The festival blends solemn rituals with lively community activities, creating an atmosphere that is both sacred and festive.
- Festival name: Dinh Cau Festival (Ky Yen Ceremony of Dinh Cau)
- Time: 15th day of the 10th lunar month each year
- Location: Dinh Cau Shrine, Phu Quoc – the symbolic spiritual refuge of island fishermen
Legend Behind the Ceremony
Long ago, life on Phu Quoc depended almost entirely on the sea. Many fishermen who ventured into stormy waters never returned. One day, a large rocky cape mysteriously rose at the river mouth, believed to be a divine sign. Locals built a shrine atop the rock to honor the guardian spirits of the sea and seek protection for their journeys. Over the centuries, despite multiple restorations, Dinh Cau has retained its ancient, mystical charm.
Solemn Rituals
The festival spans two days, 15–16 of the lunar month, featuring a series of traditional rituals:
- The Spirit Welcoming Ceremony (Nghinh Cậu)
- The Offering Ceremony (Yết Cậu)
- The Main Sacrificial Rite (Chánh tế)
All rituals express wishes for peace, smooth waters, and prosperity for the island’s fishing families.
Joyful Festivities by the Sea
After the ceremonial rites, the festival atmosphere transforms into a lively celebration. Visitors can enjoy iconic coastal games such as:
- Boat racing
- Blindfolded duck-catching at sea
- Stilt walking
- Pot breaking
- Sack racing
The duck-catching challenge is particularly beloved, drawing both locals and visitors to join the fun.
A Festival Rich in Island Heritage
More than just a spiritual event, the Dinh Cau Festival reflects the cultural identity of Phu Quoc’s seafaring communities—honoring their history, resilience, and unbroken bond with the ocean. For travelers visiting Phu Quoc during festival time, this is a meaningful and unforgettable cultural experience not to be missed.
