The “Tank Crab” — A Fascinating Species Found Only in Côn Đảo
At night, the island reveals one of its most intriguing residents: the tank crab, a species believed to be endemic to Côn Đảo. These crabs can reach up to 10 cm in length, with strong, asymmetrical claws capable of tearing through leaves and debris. Extremely shy by nature, they vanish instantly at the sound of footsteps. Scientists are still working to identify and classify this mysterious species.
Bai Cat Lon — The Largest Sea Turtle Nesting Ground in Côn Đảo
Hon Bay Canh is also famous for Bai Cat Lon, one of Côn Đảo’s 12 sea turtle nesting beaches and the most active one of all. During peak nesting season, 20–30 mother turtles may come ashore in a single night. Witnessing the nesting process is a rare and unforgettable experience for nature lovers.
A Historic Lighthouse from 1884
On the island’s northeastern side stands a lighthouse built by the French in 1884 — still standing proud today. From the top, visitors are treated to sweeping panoramic views of Hon Bay Canh and the surrounding Côn Đảo seas.
