As one of the few places in Vietnam that still harbors rare black corals, Con Co Island is gradually becoming a dream destination for ocean lovers and travelers passionate about exploring the underwater world.
Con Co is a special administrative zone of Quang Tri Province, located about 30 kilometers off the mainland. On clear days, the island can be seen rising deep green above the vast sea from the waters of Cua Tung. Although not far from shore, access to the island is still mainly by fishing boats or naval vessels, as Con Co has yet to operate dedicated tourist ferry services.
After around one hour of travel from Cua Viet Port or Cua Tung, visitors arrive at an island formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Con Co retains a simple, untouched beauty, featuring extensive primary forests, characteristic basalt rock terraces, and a rare three-layer tropical forest ecosystem that has developed on ancient coral foundations.

The Mysterious World of Black Corals Beneath the Sea
The coral reefs around Con Co boast high coverage, rich biodiversity, and a remarkably intact condition, ranking just behind well-known areas such as Phu Quoc, Con Dao, and Hon Mun. To date, 109 coral species have been recorded in the surrounding waters, including many rare varieties—most notably red corals and black corals.
Encircling the island, bands of mysterious black corals create a distinctive beauty that is both captivating and enigmatic, irresistible to anyone who loves the sea. Corals around Con Co typically begin at depths of around 4 meters, with the highest concentration along the southeastern coast. Black corals, however, are now quite rare and are usually found at depths greater than 10 meters, requiring skilled divers—and a bit of luck—to witness this underwater “treasure.”
As diving services on Con Co Island are still limited, visitors need to bring their own diving equipment. This lack of mass tourism infrastructure has, in turn, helped preserve the island’s fragile marine ecosystem.
A Paradise for Nature Lovers
Beyond its underwater allure, Con Co is an ideal destination for those who love nature and exploration. After a dive, visitors can hike through the island’s forests, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the rare sense of tranquility that defines this remote island.
The rocky shores also offer unique photo opportunities, with countless smooth, black, pearl-like stones set against fine white sand. Another must-visit spot is Con Co Lighthouse, where travelers can meet friendly island soldiers and listen to stories of life at this windswept outpost.
An Unforgettable Island Night Experience
For those staying overnight, options include homestays, local homes, or beach camping—an experience well worth trying. In the quiet atmosphere of an island with limited electricity, gathering around a beach bonfire, listening to the waves, and gazing at a sky filled with stars creates memories that are hard to forget.
Con Co is not meant for hurried trips. It is a place to slow down, dive deeper, and fully embrace the pristine beauty of island life—especially through the rare experience of diving to see black corals, a natural wonder that few places are fortunate enough to still preserve.
