Explore Thay Boi Islet – Snorkeling, Beaches & Hidden Nature

Thay Boi Islet lies off the northwestern coast of Phu Quoc, about 2.6 km from Ganh Dau Beach and roughly 1.5 km south of Hon Ban Islet. With an area of just around 3,700 m² and a coastline of about 250 meters, this tiny islet remains completely uninhabited — preserving its pristine, untouched beauty.

Because Hon Thay Boi is located close to the maritime border with Cambodia, the surrounding waters belong to a restricted zone. This means visitors may only approach the islet with licensed tour operators or under permission from local border authorities. Thanks to this limited access, the islet retains a rare, natural charm: crystal-clear waters, fine white sand, lush coconut trees, and absolute tranquility without any human impact.

The climate here is mild throughout the year, but the best time to visit is from October to March, when the sea is calm and visibility is perfect for water activities. From the main town of Phu Quoc, travelers typically head to Ganh Dau and then take a speedboat to reach the islet quickly and efficiently.

Upon arrival, visitors can enjoy swimming in the turquoise water, relaxing on the quiet stretch of beach, or wandering beneath the shade of tall coconut palms. The marine ecosystem around Hon Thay Boi connects with the vibrant coral reefs of northern Phu Quoc, such as Hon Doi Moi and Hon Mong Tay — making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. Even those who cannot swim can float with a life jacket and still admire schools of fish and colorful coral formations through the crystal-clear sea.

Many tours combine the visit with a night squid-fishing experience, a popular activity off the Ganh Dau coast. Under the glow of fishing lamps, you can try catching squid or surface fish and enjoy freshly cooked seafood right on the boat.

If conditions allow, camping on Hon Thay Boi is a unique way to immerse yourself in nature. Sleeping under the stars, waking up to the sound of gentle waves, grilling fresh seafood on the beach — these moments create an unforgettable escape from the hustle of daily life.

Though not widely developed for tourism, Hon Thay Boi remains one of the most untouched islets in northern Phu Quoc — ideal for travelers seeking peace, natural scenery, and authentic island experiences amid the vast ocean.
