Hon Buom – A Hidden Coral Paradise at the Southern Edge of Phu Quoc

Hon Buom is one of the four most pristine and beautiful islands in the An Thoi archipelago, located more than 11 km south of An Thoi Port. Isolated in the middle of the vast ocean, Hon Buom preserves an almost untouched natural beauty: crystal-clear turquoise water, impressive rock formations, and some of the most vibrant living coral reefs in all of Phu Quoc.

Though part of the well-known island cluster of Mong Tay – Gam Ghi – Buom, Hon Buom is often mislabeled as Hon Mong Tay on Google Maps, making it seem almost “invisible” to many travelers. Yet those who have set foot here all agree: Hon Buom is a true hidden gem—wild, pure, and remarkably quiet.

The first thing that captivates visitors is the mesmerizing emerald water, so clear you can see straight to the bottom. Beneath the shimmering surface lies a thriving coral ecosystem: table corals, branching staghorn corals, soft corals, and schools of colorful reef fish. This is why Hon Buom is considered one of the best snorkeling spots in Phu Quoc, rivaling even the famed Hon Gam Ghi. With just a life vest and snorkeling mask, you can witness an entire underwater world right at your feet.

On land, Hon Buom does not have long sandy beaches like Mong Tay or May Rut. Instead, the island is lined with striking rock formations shaped naturally over the years, creating unique, dramatic landscapes—perfect backdrops for photography lovers. The sunlight reflecting off the turquoise water between the rocks gives the island a “mini Maldives” feel in the heart of southern Phu Quoc.

With no residents and absolutely no tourism facilities, Hon Buom is ideal for travelers who appreciate raw nature and value peaceful, uncrowded destinations. Visitors should prepare drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, and snorkeling gear, and it is recommended to join a canoe tour that combines Mong Tay – Gam Ghi – Buom for safety and convenience.

Hon Buom may not offer modern comforts, but its simplicity and untouched charm are exactly what make it special. This is a place where you can step away from the fast pace of daily life, float in cool, refreshing waters, admire vibrant coral gardens, and enjoy rare moments of tranquillity amidst the sea and sky of southern Phu Quoc.
