Hòn Từ is a small island covering an area of approximately 1 km², located about 5 kilometers northeast of Thổ Châu Island. It is a military island with no permanent civilian population.
Since 1975, a platoon has been permanently stationed on the island to carry out defense duties. This unit belongs to Regiment 152 of Military Region 9 and is commonly referred to as the Hòn Từ Platoon, responsible for safeguarding the island and the surrounding maritime area.
