If You’ve Been to Côn Đảo Once, Don’t Miss These Peaceful and Inspiring Experiences

Côn Đảo is often described as one of the most peaceful islands in the world. If you return for a second visit, or simply want to experience the island like a local, here are the activities you should not miss.

Rent a Motorbike and Wander Around the Island

With a daily rental fee of only 100,000–120,000 VND, you can freely explore the island at your own pace—from Bến Đầm Port in the south to Đầm Trầu Beach in the north.
There are only two gas stations on the island, both located in the town center, so make sure to fill up your tank before heading out.

Côn Đảo is exceptionally safe. You can leave your motorbike anywhere without worrying about theft—many people don’t even lock their bikes.

Swim at Đầm Trầu Beach

Located near Cỏ Ống Airport on the northeastern side of the island, Đầm Trầu is one of the most beautiful beaches in Côn Đảo. It features white sand, clear turquoise water, and a gentle slope—perfect for swimming.

Here, you can sunbathe, enjoy a cold beer or fresh coconut, and relax under the shade of coastal trees. Several seafood eateries have opened recently, making it convenient to have lunch or dinner by the sea.
Note: The access road is under repair and may be a bit rough.

Take a Leisurely Walk on Quiet Island Roads

If you choose not to rent a motorbike, strolling through Côn Đảo’s peaceful streets is a wonderful option. The air is cool and refreshing, especially during the calm season from October to April.

Gentle sea breezes rustle through the canopies of ancient tropical almond trees (bàng), creating dancing sunlit patterns on the ground—like a watercolor painting.

The most beautiful street on the island is Tôn Đức Thắng Street, where you can wander all day without getting bored.

Relax at Côn Sơn Coffee and Read a Romantic Novel

Côn Đảo has many charming cafés such as Lò Vôi, Infiniti, Ngộ Quán, and especially Côn Sơn Coffee—a beautifully located shop facing the sea, right across from 914 Pier.

Whether you visit in the morning or late afternoon, the atmosphere is tranquil, breezy, and soothing.
Even on hot days, the sea breeze keeps the place cool.
Sip a cup of coffee, read a good book, or simply sit in silence—there’s nothing more relaxing.

Enjoy Fresh Seafood at Floating Rafts in Bến Đầm

Bến Đầm Port lies on the southwest side of Côn Sơn Island, about 15 km from the town center. If you travel by ferry from Vũng Tàu, this is where you first set foot.

Nestled inside Bến Đầm Bay and protected by surrounding mountains, this area is home to many floating seafood rafts.
Small boats will ferry you out to the rafts for 10,000–30,000 VND.

Prices are not the cheapest, but the seafood is exceptionally fresh—right from the ocean to your table.

Visit the Côn Đảo Prison System

Most travelers visit the infamous prison complex, which operated for 113 years (1862–1975). Known as the “Hell on Earth,” these prisons were built to detain and torture Vietnamese revolutionaries.

Notable sites include:

  • French Tiger Cages (Phú Tường Prison)
  • American Tiger Cages (Phú Bình Prison)
  • Phú Hải Prison
  • Cow Shed Area (Chuồng Bò)
  • Lò Vôi and Muối Workshops

Many visitors express chills when witnessing the cells and learning about the brutal conditions endured by prisoners.

Pay Respects at Hàng Dương Cemetery

Hàng Dương is the largest cemetery in Côn Đảo, the resting place of nearly 2,000 martyrs, including well-known patriots such as:
Nguyễn An Ninh, Lê Hồng Phong, Võ Thị Sáu, and many others.

Whether day or night, people come continuously to offer incense.
Instead of the usual somber atmosphere of cemeteries, Hàng Dương feels peaceful, solemn, and full of quiet emotions.

Trek Through Côn Đảo National Park

Côn Đảo National Park covers nearly 6,000 hectares of land and 14,000 hectares of marine area. Trekking through the forest allows you to breathe fresh air, listen to birds chirping, and admire colorful butterflies and wildlife.

Nearby beaches are pristine and secluded, offering perfect spots for relaxation.
One of the highlights in this area is Ông Đụng Beach, located within the ranger zone of the national park.

Go Snorkeling to See Coral Reefs

Côn Đảo consists of numerous small islands such as Bảy Cạnh, Tài, Tre, Trứng, all home to some of the densest coral coverage in Vietnam.

Hotels and resorts usually collaborate with tour operators to provide daily snorkeling trips.
For less than 1,000,000 VND per person, you will be equipped with proper gear and guided to explore the vibrant underwater world.

Watch Sea Turtles Nest on Bảy Cạnh Island

Sea turtle nesting season in Côn Đảo runs from April to October, with peak months from July to September.

Bảy Cạnh Island is part of the national park’s protected zone, so visitors need permission, and the number of guests is limited.
You can take a 4–5 hour trip or stay overnight (one night allowed only) to witness turtles laying eggs.

Bãi Cát Lớn on Bảy Cạnh is one of the 14 nesting beaches of Côn Đảo’s sea turtles.
