Kho Islet – The Smallest and Most Rugged Islet in the An Thoi Archipelago

Kho Islet is the smallest islet in the entire An Thoi Archipelago. On the map, it appears as nothing more than a faint dot. Located to the west and slightly closer to An Thoi than Hon May Rut Trong, the islet sits only about 9.5 km from the pier in a straight line.

True to its name, Kho Islet is completely barren. The entire surface is made up of exposed rock with no trees, no plants, and no freshwater sources. This is also why the correct English name should be Kho Islet rather than “Kho Island”—it is far too small and lacks the ecological features necessary to support human habitation.

🐠 Marine Ecosystem Around Kho Islet

The most remarkable feature around Kho Islet is the dense concentration of hard coral.

Parrotfish and butterflyfish are commonly found here, foraging during the day and seeking shelter among the coral reefs at night.

Their diet includes plankton, algae, coral polyps, and sea anemones. Notably, many species—especially parrotfish—can grind dead coral into fine sand, helping clean the reef and maintain overall marine health.

👉 Because of their critical ecological role, travelers are strongly advised not to consume parrotfish. Protecting this species is essential to preserving Phu Quoc’s marine environment, which is under increasing pressure.

When scuba diving around Kho Islet, you’ll spot these vibrant fish gliding through crystal-clear waters. However, do take caution—some areas around the islet drop off sharply into deeper zones.

A Natural Marker Between Vietnam and Cambodia

Kho Islet may be just a cluster of bare rocks rising from the sea, positioned between Phu Quoc (Vietnam) and Koh Seh (Cambodia), yet it stands as a unique and unmistakable natural landmark in the middle of the ocean.
