Long Hai Communal House (Square House) – A 200-Year-Old Cultural Heritage of Phu Quy Island

Long Hai Communal House, also known as the Square House, is located in Long Hai Commune and was built in the late 18th century. It is one of the oldest spiritual and cultural structures on Phu Quy Island, closely tied to the early settlement and village formation of the local community.

For more than two centuries, the communal house has preserved numerous valuable artifacts and Han–Nom documents that reflect village traditions, local governance, customs and the development of Long Hai and Phu Quy Island. However, the royal decrees once granted by the Nguyen Dynasty to the village’s guardian deity are no longer present. After 1975, during the transition between political regimes, some caretakers—due to limited understanding of their historical significance—mistakenly considered these decrees remnants of feudalism, leading to their destruction or loss.

Each year, the communal house hosts two major traditional ceremonies: the Spring Ritual (usually in the first or second lunar month) to pray for peace and prosperity, and the Autumn Ritual (in the seventh or eighth lunar month) to give thanks for a bountiful year.

Through generations, Long Hai villagers have contributed to maintaining and restoring the communal house, ensuring that it remains a vital symbol of community identity. Today, it stands as one of Phu Quy Island’s most representative historical and cultural relics, preserving both tangible and intangible heritage. The site retains valuable Han–Nom manuscripts and artifacts showcasing the history, culture, beliefs and architectural traditions of Long Hai over 200 years ago.

Recognizing its outstanding cultural and historical value, Long Hai Communal House was officially listed as a Provincial Historical and Cultural Relic by the People’s Committee of Binh Thuan Province under Decision 1995/QĐ-UBND dated September 7, 2010.
