Located on Lý Sơn Island in Quảng Ngãi Province, Ngọc Đức Monastery is one of the island’s most representative Buddhist sites, deeply connected to the spiritual life of the local community. Established in 1972, the monastery serves not only as a place for religious practice and communal activities, but also as a peaceful retreat for visitors exploring Lý Sơn.
Ngọc Đức Monastery was built at a time when life on Lý Sơn was still filled with hardship, with local livelihoods relying heavily on the sea and agriculture. Since its founding, the monastery has become an important spiritual refuge, where islanders place their faith and offer prayers for safety before heading out to sea or at the beginning of each onion and garlic growing season.
Over more than half a century, despite several renovations, the monastery has preserved its original spirit—simple, serene, and welcoming—faithful to the traditions of Vietnamese Khất Sĩ Buddhism. Today, Ngọc Đức Monastery remains a quiet sanctuary, reflecting the enduring spiritual values and gentle rhythm of life on Lý Sơn Island.
