Besides the famous Moon Crab and King Crab, Phu Quy Island is also home to the stunning Red Crab, affectionately called the “Queen Crab” by local fishermen. This species stands out with its vibrant ruby-red shell, making it one of the most striking marine creatures found in the waters of Phu Quy.
Red Crabs live naturally on coral reefs surrounding the island, with the largest individuals weighing over 1 kg. The elegant nickname “Queen” or “Empress” comes from the islanders’ poetic way of describing its impressive appearance.

Because Queen Crabs are caught only in small quantities and entirely from the wild, they are not commonly sold in seafood markets or served widely in restaurants. However, for those who have the chance to taste them, these crabs leave an unforgettable impression. Their meat is sweet, firm, and fragrant, while the creamy, rich crab roe adds a delightful depth of flavor.
Despite their beautiful red exterior, the meat inside is white, delicate, and exceptionally sweet. The shell is somewhat thick and hard, but the flavor more than makes up for it. Phu Quy Red Crab is best enjoyed steamed to preserve its natural sweetness, or cooked with tamarind or sweet-and-sour sauce. The creamy roe blends perfectly with the tangy sauce, creating a unique and addictive flavor that keeps visitors craving more.
For many travelers, tasting the Queen Crab is a memorable culinary highlight when visiting the charming island of Phu Quy.
