Samten Hills Dalat: A Himalayan Buddhist Spiritual Sanctuary in the Highlands of Lam Dong

Lam Dong Province

Set among the rolling hills of the southern Da Lat highlands, Samten Hills Dalat is a distinctive destination where nature, Himalayan-inspired architecture and Vajrayana Buddhist culture come together.

Located in Kambute Hamlet, Don Duong Commune, Lam Dong Province, in the area formerly belonging to Tu Tra Commune, Samten Hills Dalat is approximately 40 km from central Da Lat. Built across a series of elevated hills overlooking the Don Duong landscape, the destination offers an experience quite different from the familiar attractions of central Da Lat.

More than simply a sightseeing destination, Samten Hills has been developed as a Vajrayana Buddhist cultural and spiritual space, associated with the Drigung Kagyu lineage and inspired by the traditions, art and spiritual heritage of the Himalayan region.

Its most remarkable landmark is the Drigung Kagyu Rinchen Khorchen Khorwe Go Gek Great Prayer Wheel Stupa, officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest prayer wheel.

Samten Hills Dalat: A Himalayan Buddhist Spiritual Sanctuary in the Highlands of Lam Dong

From the Hills of Tu Tra to an International Destination

Before the development of Samten Hills, the Kambute area of Tu Tra was a relatively remote highland landscape where local communities faced challenging living and economic conditions.

Infrastructure development and investment have gradually transformed the area. Among the projects contributing to this change, Samten Hills has helped turn a little-known hillside landscape into a new tourism destination in Lam Dong.

Construction of the project began in 2019, drawing inspiration from the Vajrayana Buddhist traditions of the Himalayas. The complex incorporates Buddhist statues, ritual objects, murals and decorative works created through the collaboration of Himalayan and Vietnamese artisans.

The name “Samten” comes from Tibetan and is associated with meditation, mental stability and inner balance. This concept is reflected throughout the destination, from its architecture and religious spaces to its natural surroundings.

On March 7, 2023, Drigung Kagyu Samten Ling Vietnam at Samten Hills Dalat was officially inaugurated and opened to visitors and Buddhist pilgrims.

The Great Prayer Wheel was subsequently inaugurated on March 11, 2023, marking the establishment of one of the most distinctive Buddhist landmarks in Vietnam.

The World’s Largest Prayer Wheel

The undisputed centerpiece of Samten Hills Dalat is the Drigung Kagyu Rinchen Khorchen Khorwe Go Gek Great Prayer Wheel.

According to Guinness World Records, the prayer wheel stands 37.22 meters high and measures 16.53 meters in diameter, making it the world’s largest prayer wheel. The record was officially recognized on December 11, 2022.

The massive structure is made from copper and covered with 24-karat gold, with a total weight of approximately 200 tonnes. Elaborate decorative details cover its exterior, creating an imposing architectural presence against the surrounding hills.

The name Drigung Kagyu Rinchen Khorchen Khorwe Go Gek is associated with the Buddhist prayer-wheel tradition and the aspiration for liberation from suffering and the cycle of samsara through sincere prayer and spiritual practice.

Inside the prayer wheel are numerous Buddhist scriptures and mantras printed on paper.

Visitors can learn about the religious significance of the prayer wheel and, according to the tradition, practice kora, or clockwise circumambulation, around the structure.

For many visitors, standing beneath the enormous prayer wheel while looking across the surrounding hills is one of the most memorable experiences at Samten Hills.

Drigung Kagyu Samten Ling

Another important part of the complex is Drigung Kagyu Samten Ling Vietnam, a spiritual and cultural space associated with the Drigung Kagyu lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism.

The architecture reflects distinctive Himalayan Buddhist influences, with vivid colors, intricate patterns, Buddhist statues, ritual objects and traditional religious artwork.

Several spaces within the complex are used for Buddhist ceremonies, prayer, meditation and spiritual programs.

For visitors who are not practicing Buddhists, Samten Hills still offers an opportunity to explore a distinctive cultural tradition through its architecture, visual arts, symbolism and ceremonial practices.

Architectural and Spiritual Highlights

Samten Hills extends across several hills, with each area offering a different atmosphere and experience.

The Main Buddhist Hall

The Buddhist halls are designed with influences from Himalayan Buddhist architecture, combining vivid colors, decorative patterns, statues and religious artwork.

One of the most distinctive artistic traditions represented here is Thangka painting, a form of sacred Buddhist art traditionally associated with the Himalayan region.

Visitors are encouraged to take time to appreciate the intricate details of these works rather than simply passing through for photographs.

Buddhist Statues and Prayer Spaces

Throughout the complex are statues and symbolic spaces associated with compassion, joy, well-being and longevity.

Together, these elements create a harmonious relationship between architecture, Buddhist art and the natural landscape.

The Butter Lamp House

Butter lamps are an important part of Himalayan Buddhist traditions.

At Samten Hills, visitors can learn about the meaning behind this practice and experience a space centered around the symbolic light of butter lamps. In Buddhist tradition, the light represents wisdom, clarity and spiritual awakening.

Cultural and Heritage Exhibition Spaces

Exhibition areas provide opportunities to discover more about Buddhist ritual objects, artistic traditions, religious imagery and the cultural heritage associated with Vajrayana Buddhism.

For travelers interested in history, culture and Himalayan art, these spaces offer an important complement to the architectural experience.

Clouds, Sunrise and Sunset Over the Highlands

One of the features that distinguishes Samten Hills from many spiritual tourism destinations is its elevated natural setting.

The complex stretches across three hills, offering wide views over the Don Duong valley. When weather conditions are favorable, visitors may see clouds drifting through the valley, morning sunlight spreading across the hills or the warm colors of sunset illuminating the landscape.

Early morning and late afternoon are therefore particularly attractive times to visit.

The combination of highland scenery, wind, clouds and Himalayan-inspired Buddhist architecture gives Samten Hills an atmosphere quite different from the urban center of Da Lat.

A Place for Stillness and Reflection

Samten Hills is designed not only for sightseeing, but also for experiences that encourage visitors to slow down and spend time with themselves.

Depending on the program available, visitors may participate in activities such as offering Khata ceremonial scarves, incense offerings, butter-lamp offerings, walking kora around the Great Prayer Wheel, vegetarian dining and periods of quiet reflection.

The destination has also expanded toward wellness tourism, combining nature, relaxation and experiences designed to restore energy. Current programs include day experiences, overnight stays, camping and packages incorporating vegetarian cuisine and cultural-spiritual activities.

For this reason, Samten Hills is not exclusively a destination for Buddhist pilgrims. It can also be a place for travelers seeking cultural discovery, architecture, nature and a quieter break from the pace of modern life.
