Spotted Babylon (Ốc Hương) – The Signature Seafood Flavor of Vung Tau

In Vung Tau, ốc hương—known internationally as the Spotted Babylon snail—is considered a premium seafood delicacy thanks to its fragrant aroma, sweet firm meat, and rich nutritional value. Besides natural harvesting at sea, local fishermen also farm spotted Babylon to meet the increasing demand from both local markets and neighboring provinces.

What Is Spotted Babylon?

Spotted Babylon (scientific name Babylonia areolata, family Babyloniidae) is a marine gastropod commonly found in tropical seas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

It thrives on sandy or muddy-sandy seabeds mixed with shells of mollusks, typically at depths of 5–20 meters.

Characteristics:

  • Spiral shell with yellow and brown dotted patterns
  • Average length under 10 cm
  • Weight around 50–60 grams
  • Extremely fast-growing and voracious

Their diet consists mainly of organic detritus and decaying marine organisms, especially bivalves such as clams, mussels, scallops, and small crustaceans like shrimp and crabs. Though they normally live scattered across the seabed, spotted Babylon quickly gathers in dense clusters whenever food is found.
