Dĩ An Communal House is an old communal house with outstanding historical, cultural, and architectural values, closely associated with the formation and development of the local community. In 2019, Dĩ An Communal House was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National-level Relic, affirming its important heritage values.
Every year, Dĩ An Communal House holds a number of traditional ceremonies, among which the Dĩ An Communal House Ky Yen Festival is the largest and most important. The festival takes place on the 15th and 16th days of the eleventh lunar month and attracts many local residents.
The Ky Yen Festival and Agricultural Folk Beliefs
The Dĩ An Communal House Ky Yen Festival expresses wishes for favorable weather, fertile land, and abundant harvests, reflecting the spiritual life of communities traditionally engaged in agriculture.
Beyond its wishes for peace and prosperity, the festival provides an occasion for local people to commemorate earlier generations who contributed to land reclamation, settlement, and community building. Through traditional rituals preserved at the communal house, the value of gratitude to previous generations is expressed and passed down from one generation to another.
The festival therefore serves not only as a religious and spiritual practice but also reflects the historical process through which the local community was established on this land.
A Community Cultural and Spiritual Space
The Ky Yen Festival at Dĩ An Communal House is a form of folk cultural and spiritual practice that meets the community’s needs for religious observance, cultural participation, and recreation. Through the festival, local residents take part in traditional rituals, gather together, and maintain connections within the community.
The ritual system of Ky Yen can be understood as a network of cultural symbols through which the community expresses its understanding of the spiritual world through ceremonies and festival activities. Within the sacred space of the communal house, people demonstrate respect and reverence toward the objects of worship while expressing gratitude to previous generations.
Preserving Traditional Values
One of the notable values of the Dĩ An Communal House Ky Yen Festival is the preservation of traditional rituals and cultural values across generations. The continued practice of these traditions has allowed the festival to remain an important part of the spiritual and cultural life of the local community.
The festival also contributes to preserving cultural expressions characteristic of southern Vietnamese agricultural communities, from beliefs associated with prayers for favorable weather and abundant harvests to traditions of honoring and remembering earlier generations.
Today, the Dĩ An Communal House Ky Yen Festival remains an occasion for the local community to reconnect with its traditional cultural space, participate in inherited rituals, and strengthen relationships among people, their community, homeland, and previous generations.
National Intangible Cultural Heritage
On February 2, 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 150/QD-BVHTTDL, adding the Dĩ An Communal House Ky Yen Festival to the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List under the category of Traditional Festivals.
The recognition affirms the festival’s cultural value within the community and provides an important foundation for preserving and promoting its traditional beliefs, rituals, and cultural practices that have been maintained across generations.
The Dĩ An Communal House Ky Yen Festival is therefore not simply an annual religious celebration. It is also a cultural space that preserves collective memory, traditions of honoring previous generations, and cultural values shaped by the historical process of land reclamation and settlement.
