The Than Tai Shrine—also commonly known by locals as the Tho Than Shrine—is located on Phan Chu Trinh Street, Residential Area No. 2, Con Dao Special Zone, Ho Chi Minh City. For the people of Con Dao, this shrine is dedicated to the Mountain Spirit and the Earth God, traditional guardians of the island. However, many visitors refer to it as the “Than Tai Shrine,” associating it with prosperity and good fortune.
Locals and travelers come here to pray for wealth, business luck, a smooth life, and overall prosperity. The worship tradition is often linked to Than Tai (God of Wealth) and Ong Dia (Earth God)—two deities commonly honored together in a small altar placed close to the ground and facing the main entrance of a temple, shrine, or house. In this belief system, Ong Dia represents a blend of indigenous and multicultural spirits, while Than Tai originates from the Chinese deity Phuc Duc Chanh Than, also known as the Earth Guardian, whose worship was later adopted by the Vietnamese.

Today, the shrine remains a meaningful cultural and spiritual stop for visitors exploring Con Dao, offering a glimpse into the islanders’ tradition of honoring the protectors of the land and seeking blessings for peace and prosperity.
