Every Lunar New Year, when the spirit of spring spreads across the island, the people of Phu Quy eagerly celebrate the Spring Boat Racing Festival—a long-standing cultural tradition. Held annually on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, the festival draws enthusiastic participation from residents across the island and is regarded as one of the most vibrant events of the year.
The boat race is not only an entertaining New Year activity but also carries deep cultural and spiritual significance. After a year of hard work at sea, the festival brings renewed energy, unity, and optimism to the fishing communities. As a coastal region with a long tradition of offshore fishing, locals believe that:
“Racing boats at the start of the year clears the waters for smooth sailing ahead, inviting favorable winds, gentle seas, and a prosperous fishing season. The village that wins will enjoy luck and success throughout the year.”

Preparation and Tradition
As early as the 12th lunar month, villagers begin gathering to decorate their racing boats, devise strategies, and select the strongest young men—typically aged 18 to 35—for training. Phu Quy has 10 hamlets across three communes, each forming a team of 18 members: 2 steersmen and 16 rowers.
The traditional racecourse is set at Lach Doi Dua Beach (Quy Thanh hamlet, Ngu Phung commune), chosen for its calm waters and favorable winds. In the days leading up to the festival, teams practice at this location to build stamina and master the course.
Cultural and Spiritual Significance
Originally a simple folk activity to bring joy during the New Year, the festival has evolved into a powerful cultural symbol of Phu Quy Island. Today, the Spring Boat Racing Festival represents not only the community’s hope for good weather and abundant catches but also the islanders’ solidarity, resilience, and unwavering determination to embrace the sea.
When the ceremonial drum echoes across the sky and sea, the boats surge forward like silver arrows slicing through the waves—carrying with them pride, strength, and the indomitable spirit of the people on this frontier island. These are the same people who spend their lives safeguarding the sacred maritime sovereignty of Vietnam.
