Tho Chau Lighthouse was established and put into operation on January 25, 2000, playing a vital role in maritime navigation in the southwestern waters. The lighthouse helps identify the position of Tho Chu Island and provides essential guidance for vessels operating in the area, ensuring safe navigation across the seas of Vietnam’s far southwestern region.
The lighthouse has an impressive range of visibility, reaching approximately 29 nautical miles during the day and about 12 nautical miles at night. The tower stands 18 meters high, with a gray lantern tower and a distinctive yellow base structure that stands out against the sky and sea. Its focal height is around 140 meters above sea level, featuring a group flashing characteristic of four flashes every 15 seconds, making it easily recognizable from a distance under normal weather conditions.
The Tho Chau Archipelago occupies a forward strategic position near international shipping lanes and holds special importance for national defense and maritime security in the southwestern seas. This area forms part of the overall defense system of An Giang Province, Military Region 9, and the country as a whole, contributing significantly to the protection of Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty.
Beyond its navigational and strategic value, Tho Chu Lighthouse is also an appealing destination for visitors. Travelers to Tho Chau can combine a visit to the lighthouse with sweeping views of the vast sea and islands, while also exploring the untouched natural beauty of Hon Nhan and Hon Xanh—two pristine islets that showcase the unspoiled charm of Vietnam’s southwestern seas.
