Thuy Long Temple – A Sacred Mother Goddess Site of the Seafaring Community on Ly Son Island

Thuy Long Temple is located in Trung Hoa Hamlet, Dong An Hai Village, close to the shoreline and only a short distance from An Hai Communal House. To its west lies the Suoi Chinh archaeological site, adding cultural depth to the surrounding landscape. The temple is dedicated to Lady Thuy Long, a deity within the Mother Goddess worship tradition—one of the oldest spiritual practices among agricultural and seafaring communities on Ly Son Island.

According to legend, Lady Thuy Long is the daughter of the Dragon King. She is said to roam the sea, appearing whenever fishermen are in danger, offering protection, delivering them from harm, and bringing good fortune. In recognition of her benevolence, the Nguyen Dynasty conferred upon her the noble titles “Linh Diệu, Chiêu Ứng – Middle-Rank Deity.”

Rituals at the temple are held twice a year, in spring and autumn. Throughout the fishing season, boat owners (“cát lái”) also visit the temple regularly—before setting sail and upon completing each voyage—to offer prayers for safety, favorable winds, and abundant catches.

With its deep cultural and spiritual significance, Thuy Long Temple was officially recognized as a Provincial-Level Relic by the People’s Committee of Quang Ngai Province under Decision No. 1024/QĐ-UBND dated June 24, 2015.
