Ly Son Special Administrative Zone – the volcanic island district of Quang Ngai Province – takes pride in having four of its iconic specialties honored by the Vietnam Record Organization (VietKings) and included in the Top 100 Vietnamese culinary delicacies and signature gift specialties. These four standout products are seaweed jelly (xu xoa), bồng bồng salad (cum cúm seaweed), Ly Son garlic, and Ly Son conch patties. Each represents the rich cultural identity of the island, offering flavors that cannot be found anywhere else in Vietnam.
Following their recognition, these specialties are now widely featured on the official platforms of VietKings, the Global Vietnamese Record Organization, and media channels within the national record system; they are also promoted nationwide across all 34 provinces and cities, as well as in countries that are members of the WorldKings system. This recognition elevates Ly Son’s culinary heritage, helping its local cuisine reach a broader audience and strengthening its reputation among domestic and international visitors.
Ly Son Seaweed Jelly (Xu Xoa) – A Refreshing Taste from the Volcanic Sea
Xu xoa is made from naturally growing seaweed that clings to rocky reefs around the island. During low tide, locals harvest and sun-dry the seaweed before cooking it into a smooth, translucent jelly. The seaweed is rich in minerals, calcium, and amino acids, making the dish exceptionally refreshing and beneficial for health. Simple yet distinctive, xu xoa captures the pure, ocean-fresh taste of Ly Son.

Bồng Bồng (Cum Cúm) Seaweed Salad – A Delicacy from Offshore Rocky Reefs
Bồng bồng seaweed—locally known as cum cúm—grows naturally on underwater rocky reefs located 300–700 meters off the coast. Scientific studies show that this seaweed contains high levels of plant protein and more than 90 types of minerals. The salad, typically mixed with a tangy-sweet dressing, retains its natural crispness and is a refreshing treat enjoyed by many visitors to the island.

Ly Son Garlic – The “White Gold” of the Island
Ly Son garlic is famous throughout Vietnam for its exceptional flavor and nutritional value. Grown on volcanic soil enriched with basalt sand and seaweed, the garlic develops a uniquely mild aroma, warm spiciness, and high essential oil content. It has been officially certified by the National Office of Intellectual Property, becoming a protected regional brand. For visitors, Ly Son garlic is a meaningful gift representing the essence of the island.

Ly Son Conch Patties – A Creative Twist on Local Seafood
Conch is a familiar seafood for island residents, traditionally boiled or stir-fried with lemongrass and chili. However, Ly Son’s conch patties introduce a creative culinary twist, turning the firm, sweet conch meat into a uniquely flavorful specialty. Originating from the culinary innovations of Đảo Ngọc Ly Son Hotel, this dish has since become widely known and officially recognized as a Vietnamese gift specialty, enriching the island’s growing food culture.
