Traditional Art Forms of Phu Quy Island

Beyond its unspoiled beaches and breathtaking coastal landscapes, Phu Quy Island preserves a rich treasury of intangible cultural heritage—living traditions that reflect the vibrant spiritual life of its coastal community. Among them, the most distinctive are hát bội and chèo bả trạo, two folk performing arts cherished and passed down through generations.

Hát Bội & Chèo Bả Trạo – The Soul of Phu Quy’s Folk Heritage

Hát bội (classical Vietnamese opera) was once a flourishing theatrical art on Phu Quy, closely tied to village festivals, religious ceremonies, and major cultural events. Performances often depicted historical tales, celebrated loyalty and righteousness, and conveyed moral lessons rooted in the daily life and patriotic spirit of the island people.

Complementing hát bội is chèo bả trạo, a ceremonial folk performance deeply embedded in the maritime culture of Vietnam’s fishing communities. This ritual singing and dancing form is dedicated to the Whale God (Nam Hai Dai Tuong Quan), expressing gratitude for protection at sea and prayers for safe voyages and abundant catches.

The powerful chants, rhythmic oar movements, and resounding calls performed against the backdrop of the ocean create a sacred and emotionally stirring atmosphere—an artistic expression uniquely born from the life of seafarers.

Hát Sắc Bùa – A Fading Memory of Bygone Days

Phu Quy was once home to a distinctive folk performance known as hát sắc bùa (or “sắc bùa singing”). Traditionally staged during festivals at village communal houses, temples, and whale-worship shrines, this art form featured call-and-response singing, where performers took turns improvising lyrics. It fostered community connection and festive joy.

Although sắc bùa singing has gradually disappeared over time and is no longer practiced, it remains a cherished memory for the island’s elders and a reminder of Phu Quy’s vibrant cultural past.

Hospitality – The Living Culture of Phu Quy’s People

More than its folk arts, what truly captivates visitors is the warmth and sincerity of Phu Quy’s residents. Islanders are known for their honesty, kindness, and strong sense of community. They welcome visitors with open hearts, always ready to help a stranger in need.

On Phu Quy, visitors never worry about losing their belongings, getting disturbed, or feeling unsafe. Peacefulness and genuine hospitality have become the island’s hallmark. A friendly smile at the harbor, a casual greeting on a quiet coastal road, or a cup of warm tea offered on a breezy afternoon—these simple moments make Phu Quy unforgettable.
