Tranh Cai River is one of the most characteristic rivers of southeastern Phu Quoc. It is formed from two main freshwater sources of the Hàm Ninh mountain range—Suoi Tranh and Suoi Thay—which merge deep within the forest before flowing gently through the Tranh Cai and Duong To area, eventually connecting to the natural mangrove system downstream.
Suoi Tranh – a clear, refreshing stream from the Ham Ninh forest
Suoi Tranh originates from small mountain creeks, flowing over layered rock terraces to create a soft, crystal-clear stream. It is not only an important freshwater source for the river but also one of Phu Quoc’s most popular nature attractions.

Suoi Thay – a stream tied to local cultural stories
Suoi Thay (also known as Suoi Thay Phung) begins on the lower slopes of the Ham Ninh range, carrying clean water through dense forest before joining Tranh Cai River. Its name is associated with a local legend about a healer who once lived in this area, adding cultural depth to the stream’s identity.
The journey of Tranh Cai River
After receiving water from both streams, Tranh Cai River flows through melaleuca forests, mangroves, and small lowland valleys of the Duong To region. Along its banks is a thriving natural ecosystem featuring mangroves, nipa palms, melaleuca trees, and a variety of birds and aquatic species that live here year-round.
The river is not large, but it carries a rustic charm: calm water, gentle curves, trees leaning toward the river’s surface, and the occasional small riverside home of fishermen who rely on the river for daily life.
The role of Tranh Cai River
Provides natural freshwater for southeastern Phu Quoc
Sustains the mangrove ecosystems along Duong To
Serves as a fishing ground for local residents
Helps regulate water flow during the rainy season
Contributes to the interconnected forest–stream ecosystem of Ham Ninh
Although Duong To is rapidly developing with new projects, Tranh Cai River still preserves its peaceful, pristine character. It remains a “green water vein” that connects the Ham Ninh forest to the southeastern coastal areas of Phu Quoc.
