Triều Dương Communal House – A Timeless Cultural Landmark on Phú Quý Island

Triều Dương Communal House is located in Triều Dương Hamlet, Tam Thanh Commune, within the Phú Quý Special Zone of Lâm Đồng Province. It is a sacred cultural space closely tied to the spiritual life of the island community for centuries.

According to preserved historical records, the communal house was first built in 1773. It serves as a place of worship dedicated to the Village Guardian Deity (Thành Hoàng Bổn Cảnh) and honors the early settlers who pioneered and established the village. Its architecture reflects traditional Vietnamese communal-house design, deeply connected to the agricultural and fishing heritage of Phú Quý Island’s residents.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The name “Triều Dương Communal House” mirrors the formation of the village itself, following the long-standing Vietnamese custom of naming the communal house after the village during the southward expansion period. Beyond being a religious center, it has long functioned as a symbol of community cohesion and a venue for important local rituals.

The communal house also preserves five royal decrees (sắc phong) granted to the Village Guardian Deity during the reigns of Emperors Tự Đức, Đồng Khánh, and Khải Định. These documents are invaluable cultural artifacts reflecting the site’s historical importance.

Traditional Festivals

Triều Dương Communal House hosts two major annual ceremonies:

  • Spring Festival: held in the first or second lunar month
  • Autumn Festival: held in the seventh or eighth lunar month

These rites are performed with solemnity and carry the distinct spiritual traditions of the island’s fishing communities.

Recognized Provincial Relic

After more than 241 years, Triều Dương Communal House has remained largely unchanged, preserving its ancient name and cultural essence. Due to its outstanding historical and cultural value, it was officially recognized as a Provincial Historical and Cultural Relic by the People’s Committee of Bình Thuận Province under Decision 2959/QĐ-UBND dated November 16, 2007.
