Bai Can Reef – A Shallow Coral Wonderland of Phu Quy Island

Bai Can (also known as Ran Can or the Floating Net Area) is a shallow coral reef covering about 1 km² on the eastern side of Phu Quy Island. It lies just 300 meters offshore from Phu Long Hamlet in Long Hai Commune. The reef is home to a diverse ecosystem featuring hard corals, table corals, cabbage corals, lush carpets of green sea grapes, and schools of colorful fish—creating an underwater landscape that is both vibrant and captivating.

Bai Can is also mentioned in a traditional Phu Quy folk verse, which describes the reef’s role as a shelter for boats and a place where islanders gather:

Doi Thầy lề mũi thon don
Tàu đem vô đó mà lòn gió trong (núp gió – to shelter from the wind)
Nội hòn lớn nhỏ mừng lòng
Ông già con nít xóm trong xóm ngoài

Hòn ta có chiếc tàu mài (tàu mắc cạn – a boat run aground)

This folk verse reflects the life, emotions, and maritime culture of the island community—where reefs like Bai Can are not only natural treasures but also integral to the stories and livelihoods of generations of Phu Quy fishermen.
