Hon Son Island Travel Guide: When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Kien Hai Travel

Although Hòn Sơn has become more well-known in recent years, the island still preserves its pristine, captivating beauty. To make the most of your trip, it’s important to understand the island’s weather patterns. In general, May to December is considered the ideal travel period thanks to calm seas and an abundance of fresh seafood—especially shrimp, squid, and crab.

Below is a seasonal breakdown to help you choose the perfect time to go:

Northeast Monsoon Season (November – February)

Weather: Cool like autumn, breezy, and almost rain-free. The sea turns crystal clear with excellent visibility.
Best activities: Snorkeling, fishing, trekking, cycling through forest trails with changing foliage.
Notes: This is the festive season on the island (such as the Nghinh Ông Festival on the 15th of the 10th lunar month and the Nguyễn Trung Trực Temple Festival in the first lunar month). Bring a light jacket.

Southwest Monsoon Season (Mid-June – Early September)

Weather: Rainy season, fresh air, cool temperatures, and misty mountain peaks that create a dreamy, romantic atmosphere.
Best activities: Enjoying grilled seafood at the night market, sipping tea while watching morning fog, reading as the rain gently falls.
Ideal for: Travelers who love peace, slow living, and quiet retreats.

Transition Seasons (March – June & September – October)

Weather: Extremely calm seas, smooth like glass. Sunsets during this time are the most spectacular of the year.
Landscape: Forest flowers are in full bloom, especially golden wild apricot blossoms lining the trails.
Experiences: Enjoy a nostalgic countryside vibe with firefly-lit nights and serene coastal evenings.

💡 Travel Tip

Before departing, always check the marine weather forecast for the Cà Mau – An Giang sea region, as sudden rough seas may affect travel schedules.
