Kien Hai Special Zone, An Giang Province

The Kien Hai Special Zone was established based on the entire natural area and population of the former Kien Hai island district (previously under Kien Giang Province). With 23 islands scattered across the southwestern sea, Kien Hai covers 27.85 km² of natural land and is home to 20,550 residents, forming a prosperous island region rich in marine resources and tourism potential.

Geographical Location & Administrative Center

The administrative center of the special zone is located on Hon Tre Island, approximately 28 km off the coast from Rach Gia City.

The farthest island cluster in the zone is Nam Du Archipelago, situated about 90 km from Rach Gia. Another major island, Hon Son (Hon Son Rai), lies 30 km west of Hon Tre and roughly 60 km from the mainland.

This strategic positioning creates a network of islands closely connected by sea routes, forming a natural marine corridor in the southwestern waters of Vietnam.

Rapidly Developing Infrastructure & Public Utilities

In recent years, transportation infrastructure across Hon Tre, Hon Son, An Son, and Nam Du has been significantly upgraded, including:

  • Fully paved ring roads and cross-island routes
  • Modern and synchronized piers
  • Convenient internal transportation for residents and travelers

Every day, eight high-speed ferries travel between the special zone and the mainland (Rach Gia, Ha Tien), with travel times ranging from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the destination.

National-grid electricity now reaches Hon Tre and Hon Son, while Nam Du operates 24/7 power generators, adequately meeting local needs.

Strong Marine Economy & Abundant Natural Resources

Kien Hai benefits from a wide, clean, and resource-rich marine area—ideal for developing various economic sectors:

  • Offshore fishing
  • Cage and raft aquaculture
  • Seafood processing and export
  • Marine tourism combined with experiential fishing activities

Many fishing families have achieved stable incomes thanks to the abundant natural resources surrounding the island group.

A Pristine Island Paradise – A Top Eco-Tourism Destination
