Ong Rong Peak is one of the most fascinating trekking spots on Hon Son Island, Kien Hai Special Zone. Although it is not as high as Ma Thien Lanh, this 250-meter peak offers a rugged, challenging trail—and a breathtaking reward waiting at the top.
The legendary hundred-year-old cycad shaped like a dragon
The highlight of Ong Rong Peak is the ancient cycad that locals affectionately call “the old dragon.”
Its long, curved trunk coils along the rocky cliff, stretching toward the sea as if guarding the island. This rare, naturally formed shape resembles a dragon lying atop the mountain, and that is how the peak earned its name—Ong Rong (Dragon Elder).
Besides this iconic tree, the peak is home to many other old cycads, some blooming beautifully during the season, enriching the wild and mystical atmosphere of Hon Son’s mountain forest.
Local resident Mr. Trần Quốc Việt shared:
“When my father was young and climbed this mountain, the cycad was already big. Now I’m over 70, so it must be at least a hundred years old.”
A short trail—but much more challenging than Ma Thien Lanh
Despite being only one-third the length of the Ma Thien Lanh route, the trek to Ong Rong Peak is significantly tougher. You will need to:
- Trek through dense forest and narrow winding paths
- Climb steep, slippery slopes—some nearly a meter high
- Scale vertical sections using vines and tree roots
- Stay close to your guide or group to avoid getting lost
But once you reach the top, every effort is rewarded. The summit opens into a wide natural stone platform with strong ocean winds and a sweeping view of Bac Beach and the endless green forest of Hon Son.
The mystic stone tables of Ong Rong Peak
A few hundred meters from the ancient cycad lie two flat stone slabs resembling giant tables.
According to island folklore, these stones were where celestial beings descended on full-moon nights to drink wine and play chess. Whether myth or not, the tranquil, ethereal scenery makes it easy to believe such stories.
