Located at the foot of Prenn Pass on National Highway 20, Prenn Waterfall is one of the well-known natural attractions on the way into Da Lat. The waterfall flows gently over a curved basalt cliff into a small valley surrounded by pine trees, gardens, and lush vegetation, creating a peaceful stop between the mountain pass and the city.
Just around 10 km from central Da Lat, Prenn is also conveniently positioned for travelers arriving from Lien Khuong Airport or leaving the city toward the lowlands.
Where Is Prenn Waterfall?
Prenn Waterfall lies at the foot of Prenn Pass, close to National Highway 20, about 10 km from central Da Lat in Lam Dong Province.
Prenn Pass has long been one of the main gateways to Da Lat. Because of its location, the waterfall can easily be incorporated into a city sightseeing itinerary rather than requiring a separate trip deep into the mountains.
For travelers coming from Lien Khuong Airport, Prenn can be one of the first stops before continuing uphill toward Da Lat. It can also serve as a final sightseeing stop before descending the pass and continuing south.
A Gentle Waterfall Surrounded by Pine Forest
Prenn is not particularly tall, but its charm lies in the graceful shape of the falling water.
The cascade drops from a basalt cliff approximately 9 to 10 meters high, spreading across a curved rock face before flowing into a small pool below. The water forms a broad, delicate curtain rather than a powerful vertical plunge.
One of Prenn’s most distinctive geological features is the shallow cavern-like recess behind the waterfall. A walkway allows visitors to approach the rear of the falling water and experience the cascade from an unusual perspective.
Stone steps wind down the hillside toward the waterfall, passing through greenery and flower gardens. A small curved bridge crosses the pool, offering another pleasant viewpoint.
The Story Behind the Name “Prenn”
The name Prenn is closely associated with the long history of the highlands and the cultural interactions between communities living in the Central Highlands and the coastal areas of Central Vietnam.
One interpretation traces the name to an ancient Cham term associated with an area of invasion, contested territory, or a frontier zone. Historical traditions suggest that the region once stood near areas of conflict and interaction between Cham communities from the coastal region and indigenous groups living on the Lang Biang Plateau.
Another local explanation among the K’Ho people connects the name with the word “Prềnh,” referring to a bitter-fruited forest plant that was once abundant around the streams in the area.
These different interpretations reflect the cultural layers surrounding Prenn. Although the exact origin of the name is explained in more than one way, the word has become inseparable from the history and landscape of the gateway to Da Lat.
Prenn in the History of Da Lat
At the beginning of the 20th century, when the French began surveying and developing Da Lat as a highland resort town, Prenn Pass became an important route into the emerging destination.
The area at the foot of the pass naturally served as a resting point for travelers before continuing uphill. Its pine forests, mountain scenery, and waterfall also made Prenn an attractive landscape for sightseeing.
Over time, Prenn Waterfall became one of the recognized scenic landmarks around Da Lat and was later listed as a national-level scenic site.
Things to Do at Prenn Waterfall
Walk Behind the Waterfall
The walkway behind the waterfall is perhaps Prenn’s most distinctive experience.
Visitors can follow the path toward the recess behind the curtain of water, allowing them to look outward through the falling stream. The combination of rock, water, and changing light creates a perspective that cannot be experienced from the front of the waterfall.
See the Waterfall from Above
A cable car system provides another way to experience the landscape. From above, visitors can look down over the waterfall and surrounding valley, with pine-covered hills forming a natural backdrop.
The elevated view also gives a better sense of how the waterfall sits within the wider mountain landscape around Prenn Pass.
Explore the Gardens and Ecological Areas
The area around Prenn includes gardens, orchid displays, animal areas, walking paths, small bridges, and resting spots among the trees.
Rather than simply stopping to photograph the waterfall, visitors can spend more time exploring the surrounding landscape at a relaxed pace.
Some areas feature suspension bridges and small tree-top shelters, adding variety to the experience for families and casual visitors.
Visit the Hung Kings Temple Complex
Another cultural attraction within the area is the Hung Kings Temple Complex, which includes Ha Temple, Trung Temple, and Thuong Temple.
Set on elevated ground, the complex combines a Vietnamese cultural and spiritual setting with views of the surrounding highlands. From the hilltop, visitors can look toward the imposing Voi Mountain and the surrounding landscape.
Best Time to Visit Prenn Waterfall
Prenn Waterfall is surrounded by pine forest, which helps create a relatively cool environment throughout the year. The waterfall generally maintains a steady flow, making it possible to visit in different seasons.
For travelers who prefer dry weather and easier walking conditions, November to April is generally a convenient period to visit. During the rainy season, the surrounding vegetation becomes particularly lush and the waterfall can appear more vigorous, although some paths may become slippery.
Comfortable shoes with good traction are recommended, especially when walking near the waterfall, bridges, and damp rock surfaces.
A Convenient Stop on a Da Lat Itinerary
One of Prenn Waterfall’s greatest advantages is its location directly along the route into Da Lat.
Travelers arriving from Lien Khuong Airport can visit the waterfall before continuing toward the city center. Those leaving Da Lat can make Prenn their final sightseeing stop before descending the pass and continuing along National Highway 20.
With its pine forests, gentle curtain of falling water, distinctive rock formation, and layers of local history, Prenn Waterfall offers an easy and refreshing introduction to the landscapes surrounding Da Lat.
