Uncle Ho’s Memorial House on Mai Thuc Loan Street is one of the historical sites associated with President Ho Chi Minh’s childhood years in Hue. The house was where his family lived when his father, Nguyễn Sinh Sắc, came to Hue to study at the Imperial Academy. It also preserves memories of Nguyễn Sinh Cung, the childhood name of President Ho Chi Minh, and his family during their first period living in the city.

The Nguyễn Sinh Sắc Family in Hue
In 1894, Nguyễn Sinh Sắc, the father of President Ho Chi Minh, passed the Confucian examination in Nghệ An and received the degree of Cử nhân. In 1895, he traveled to Hue to take the Hội examination but was unsuccessful. To prepare for another examination, he enrolled at the Imperial Academy in Hue and was accepted.
In order to take care of his children and have his family nearby as a source of encouragement during his studies, Nguyễn Sinh Sắc returned to his hometown and brought his wife, Hoàng Thị Loan, and their two sons, Nguyễn Sinh Khiêm and Nguyễn Sinh Cung, to Hue. Through an acquaintance, he rented a small house in the Đông Ba area, which is now preserved as the memorial site on Mai Thuc Loan Street.
According to the historical materials about the site, this was where Nguyễn Sinh Cung spent happy childhood years with his family. His father was a disciplined and devoted scholar who spent his days and nights studying, while his mother, Hoàng Thị Loan, was gentle, hardworking and diligent at her loom. The family also experienced the joy of welcoming the birth of Nguyễn Sinh Xin Chào.
Childhood Memories and Loss
The years spent in this house were not only associated with warm family memories but also with profound loss in Nguyễn Sinh Cung’s childhood.
It was here that the young Nguyễn Sinh Cung experienced the loss of his mother and heard the cries of his infant sibling suffering from hunger and needing milk. These experiences left a deep impression on his young mind.
During these difficult times, the kindness and support of the poor people of Hue also became an important part of his childhood memories. According to the historical materials about the site, these profound bonds of affection contributed to the cultural values, moral character and humanistic spirit associated with Ho Chi Minh, who later devoted his life to the independence and freedom of the nation and the happiness of the people.
