Dinh Yen Mat Weaving

Dong Thap Province

Dong Thap is known not only for its vast rice fields and abundant fruit orchards, but also for preserving a variety of distinctive traditional crafts. Among them, Dinh Yen mat weaving is a craft with a history spanning hundreds of years, closely associated with the daily life, livelihood, and cultural traditions of communities in southern Vietnam.

Dinh Yen Mat Village developed in a riverine environment where fertile alluvial areas provided favorable conditions for growing sedge and bo, two important materials traditionally used in mat making. According to folk-culture researchers cited in the source, some of the village’s early settlers originated from the northern coastal plains, including Thai Binh and Nam Dinh. During their migration southward, they brought traditional mat-weaving skills with them and gradually established the craft village in its present form.

From Sedge Plants to Mat Fibers

Making a high-quality mat begins with careful selection of the raw material. The sedge fibers need to be relatively uniform, neither too thick nor too fine. After harvesting, the sedge is exposed to sunlight for approximately 30 minutes to one hour. This helps increase its brittleness and prepares the fibers for dyeing.

Dyeing is another important part of the craft. The coloring material is boiled in water, after which small bundles of sedge are dipped into the dye. Artisans adjust the intensity of the color by controlling the number of times the fibers are dipped, sometimes repeating the process two or three times to achieve the desired shade.

After dyeing, the sedge is dried in the sun once again before being prepared for weaving.

Weaving Techniques and Decorative Patterns

Mat weaving requires patience, dexterity, and experience accumulated through generations. Depending on the type of mat being produced, artisans use different combinations of colors, weaving arrangements, and decorative techniques.

Among the products of Dinh Yen Mat Village, floral mats and vảy ốc mats are considered particularly challenging to weave. Artisans must carefully calculate the distribution of colors, form decorative motifs, and create patterns known locally as “bắt chữ” so that the details remain even, balanced, and visually harmonious across the entire mat.

The decorative motifs often draw inspiration from nature and everyday life, including snail-shell patterns, trà niên, and con cờ. Their simple yet lively appearance contributes to the distinctive character of Dinh Yen mats.

Mats Bearing the Identity of Dinh Yen

Dinh Yen mats come in a wide range of styles, colors, and decorative patterns. Alongside simple plain mats, the village is also known for mats featuring traditional motifs, stork designs, and elaborately decorated wedding mats.

Once weaving is complete, the mat is trimmed along the edges, fabric is sewn onto it, and the finished product is dried once more. What begins as simple sedge fibers is transformed through the artisan’s hands into a familiar household item with both practical and aesthetic value.

Each pattern reflects the artisan’s attention to detail. Familiar images from nature and everyday life are expressed through the arrangement and coloring of the fibers, creating a modest yet distinctly local form of craftsmanship.

The Craft and Daily Life in Dinh Yen

Mat weaving has become an integral part of community life in Dinh Yen. The work requires diligence and precision, from preparing the sedge and dyeing the fibers to weaving and finishing each product. These skills have been passed down through generations, creating continuity between experienced artisans and younger practitioners.

Hundreds of households remain connected with the craft, regarding mat weaving as an important source of income and a means of providing employment locally for rural workers. The craft therefore exists not merely as a traditional technique, but also as part of the economic life and stability of the community.

Cultural Values of Dinh Yen Mat Weaving

Dinh Yen mats are first and foremost everyday household products, but behind each one lies a body of traditional knowledge, technical skills, experience in processing raw materials, and methods for creating decorative patterns that have accumulated over generations.

The craft also reflects the way local communities adapted to the riverine environment of southern Vietnam, from making use of locally available plant materials to developing a craft suited to regional conditions. Traditional patterns therefore serve not only practical purposes but also preserve elements of local aesthetics and cultural memory.

National Intangible Cultural Heritage

For its values in traditional craftsmanship, community life, and intergenerational transmission, Dinh Yen mat weaving was included in Vietnam’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism under Decision No. 3084/QĐ-BVHTTDL dated September 9, 2013.

The recognition contributes to affirming the cultural value of mat weaving in the local community and provides a foundation for continuing to preserve traditional techniques, patterns, and craft knowledge.

Today, amid changing lifestyles, Dinh Yen mats continue to tell the story of sedge fields, skilled hands, and a traditional craft that has taken root in southern Vietnam over generations. From an everyday household object, the mat has become part of Dinh Yen’s cultural memory and a distinctive expression of the traditional craft heritage of Dong Thap.
