Tuyen Lam Lake, Da Lat

Dalat Travel

Location: Approximately 5 km south of Da Lat city center, in the Phuong Hoang Mountain and Tuyen Lam pine forest area.

Surrounded by vast pine forests south of Da Lat, Tuyen Lam Lake is a vast expanse of calm blue water set among mountains and rolling hills. Its winding shoreline, small islands, pine-covered slopes and tranquil atmosphere create one of the most distinctive natural landscapes of Da Lat.

Once a remote valley at an elevation of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, the area was gradually transformed into an important recreational destination in the Central Highlands. With a water surface of approximately 350 hectares, while some descriptions refer to the wider lake area as covering more than 360 hectares, Tuyen Lam offers an ideal setting for boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain exploration and other outdoor activities.

From the Tia Stream Valley to Tuyen Lam Lake

The original landscape of Tuyen Lam was a valley that received the flow of Tia Stream, the upper source of the Da Tam River. During the years of resistance, the forests and streams of the Tia area served as an important revolutionary base known as the Quang Trung Base Area.

From 1982 to 1987, the Lam Dong Irrigation Department organized the construction of a large dam across Tia Stream. The purpose was to create a reservoir for irrigation, providing water for the rice-growing areas of Duc Trong District. The lake was initially known as Quang Trung Lake.

After its completion, the reservoir gradually became an increasingly popular attraction in Da Lat and was later renamed Tuyen Lam Lake.

The name can be interpreted through its Sino-Vietnamese characters: Tuyen (泉) means stream or spring, while Lam (林) means forest. “Tuyen Lam” therefore evokes the meeting of water and forest, an idea that reflects the landscape surrounding the lake.

In 2017, Tuyen Lam Lake was recognized by the Prime Minister as Vietnam’s first National Tourism Area.

Blue Water Surrounded by Pine Forests

Tuyen Lam Lake has an average depth of approximately 10 to 15 meters. The deepest section, near the water-release dam, can exceed 30 meters.

One of the lake’s most distinctive features is its winding terrain, with numerous small islands rising from the water, surrounded by extensive stands of three-leaf pine trees.

Rolling hills, old-growth forest patches and pine-covered mountain slopes unfold around the lake. The scenery seems to change with every turn of the shoreline, creating a succession of different landscapes across the water.

The dry season in this area can last for several months with very little rainfall, yet the lake continues to retain a substantial volume of water. Its surface is generally deep blue and relatively calm, rarely experiencing large waves.

From Truc Lam Zen Monastery, located on Phuong Hoang Mountain, visitors can look toward the southeast and take in a panoramic view of the lake surrounded by pine forests. From above, the winding water surface weaving through the green landscape forms one of Da Lat’s most recognizable natural scenes.

Exploring Tuyen Lam Lake by Boat

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience Tuyen Lam is to explore the lake by motorboat, boat or sailboat.

When the weather is favorable, a journey across the lake takes visitors through broad stretches of water, small islands and winding sections surrounded by pine forests. Green hills, patches of mature forest and gentle slopes are reflected on the water, creating scenery that constantly changes as the boat moves.

Some visitors spend an entire day on the lake, enjoying the cool air and rare sense of tranquility. Activities such as boating, fishing, hiking and mountain exploration add an adventurous dimension to the experience.

The lake is particularly suitable for travelers who want to step away from the rhythm of the city and spend time in a quieter natural environment.

Misty Mornings, Brilliant Midday Light and Deep Blue Evenings

Tuyen Lam reveals a different character throughout the day.

In the early morning, white mist often settles over the water, creating an exceptionally quiet atmosphere. Birdsong rises from the surrounding forests before fading across the broad surface of the lake.

By midday, when the sky is bright and clear, the water can take on a vivid blue color, reflecting sunlight like fragments of glass.

As afternoon approaches, the light becomes softer and cooler, while the lake gradually turns a deeper shade of blue. The surrounding mountains and pine forests are reflected on the water, creating an atmosphere that is especially inviting for walking, fishing or simply sitting quietly and taking in the view.

In spring, the lake is often described as resembling a jade-green expanse amid the pine forests, adding another layer to the romantic character that has long been associated with Da Lat.

Experiences Around the Lake

Tuyen Lam is not only about water and pine forests. The surrounding area also offers opportunities to discover aspects of the culture and outdoor life of the Central Highlands.

Visitors can experience elements of the culture of ethnic communities in the southern Central Highlands through grilled dishes, bamboo-tube rice, ruou can rice wine, campfires and gong performances. Wood carvings, traditional stilt houses and long houses add cultural depth to the landscape.

A range of outdoor activities has also been associated with the Tuyen Lam area, including archery, fishing, forest exploration, beach volleyball, one-goal football and costume activities inspired by the mountain communities.

Elephant and horseback riding have also been introduced as recreational experiences at Tuyen Lam Tourism Area and Da Tien outdoor area. The source material also records that trained elephants once lived in these areas, alongside the return of certain wild animals.

For visitors interested in nature exploration, forest excursions can offer opportunities to observe birds and wildlife and listen to the distinctive sounds of the mountain forests.

The combination of a large lake, extensive pine forests and natural surroundings gives Tuyen Lam an identity that goes beyond a conventional sightseeing destination.

How to Get to Tuyen Lam Lake

From central Da Lat, visitors can follow National Highway 20 toward Prenn Pass. After passing Datanla Waterfall, turn left and continue for a little over 1 km. The road then passes through extensive pine forests before reaching Tuyen Lam Lake.

At approximately 5 km from the city center, the journey is short, yet the landscape quickly changes from an urban environment to expansive pine-covered hills and mountain scenery.

The route also connects several major attractions in southern Da Lat, particularly Truc Lam Zen Monastery, Phuong Hoang Mountain and Tuyen Lam Lake.

Tuyen Lam Lake, Where Stream Meets Forest

The appeal of Tuyen Lam lies not simply in the size of its water surface, but in the way Tia Stream, pine forests, mountains and water come together within a single landscape.

From its origins as a natural valley and later as an irrigation reservoir, Tuyen Lam gradually became one of Da Lat’s most important scenic destinations. Every bend in the lake reveals a different view: young pine forests in one direction, higher mountains covered with trees in another, and calm water reflecting the sky and surrounding landscape.

With its peaceful atmosphere, cool climate and diverse range of outdoor experiences, Tuyen Lam Lake is one of Da Lat’s signature destinations for travelers seeking nature, relaxation and the timeless beauty of the Central Highlands.
