Located near the Han River in the heart of Da Nang, APEC Sculpture Park is a distinctive public space that combines contemporary architecture, international sculpture and the cultural spirit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. With its collection of artworks from different APEC economies and its striking architectural canopy, the park has become both a cultural destination and a popular public gathering space in the city.
From the APEC 2017 Sculpture Park to a New Urban Landmark
The original APEC Park was developed on a triangular site of approximately 3,047 square meters, at the intersection of 2 Thang 9 Street and the extended Bach Dang Street. The park was inaugurated in November 2017 during APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, hosted by Da Nang.
The original park featured 21 sculptures from different countries and APEC member economies, representing a variety of artistic styles and approaches. Many of the works explored themes of unity, cooperation and a shared future, reflecting the spirit of the 2017 APEC theme, “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Common Future.”
The park was presented as a gift from Vietnam to APEC delegates, member economies and the people of the city. Around 752 square meters were used for paved walkways and public access, while the remaining area was dedicated to greenery and sculpture displays.
One of the Vietnamese works is “Khoi Nguyen” (The Origin), inspired by the convergence of ancient tree forms. The artwork evokes ideas of roots, strength and connection, offering a symbolic interpretation of cultural continuity.
The Expanded APEC Park and Its Iconic Canopy
As the original park quickly became a popular public space, Da Nang approved an expansion plan in September 2018. The enlarged area covers approximately 8,668 square meters, extending toward Bach Dang Street and incorporating additional public spaces along 2 Thang 9 and Binh Minh 4 streets.
The expanded complex was designed with landscaped gardens, pedestrian areas, a stage, fountains, seating areas, children’s facilities, public toilets and parking spaces.
Its most recognizable architectural feature is the large steel canopy on the second level, known as “Canh Dieu Bay Cao”, or “The Soaring Kite.” Its sweeping three-dimensional curves create a dynamic silhouette above the park and symbolize the aspiration and development of Da Nang as one of the leading cities of central Vietnam.
The expansion was carried out in phases from 2020 to 2022, with an investment of more than VND 759 billion. The expanded APEC Park was inaugurated on January 10, 2022, transforming the original sculpture garden into a larger cultural, recreational and public complex.
Sculptures, Architecture and Views of the Han River
The expanded APEC Park brings together more than 20 sculptures representing different artistic traditions. Alongside Vietnam’s “Khoi Nguyen”, the collection includes works associated with countries and economies such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, Russia, Indonesia and Singapore.
The architecture and public spaces are organized across several levels. The basement covers approximately 3,027 square meters and includes parking, technical facilities and public restrooms. The first floor provides around 2,750 square meters of covered multipurpose space, including tourism information areas, a café, places for relaxation and reading, and souvenir facilities.
The second floor is an open viewing area overlooking the Han River. Visitors can enjoy fountains, a reflective pool, a music-and-light floor and broad views toward Dragon Bridge and Tran Thi Ly Bridge.
The combination of contemporary architecture, international sculpture and riverside scenery gives the park a character that is different from traditional tourist attractions. It functions simultaneously as an art space, a civic gathering place and an urban viewpoint.
A Popular Public Space in Da Nang
APEC Sculpture Park is open to the public and offers free access to its outdoor spaces. It has become particularly lively in the late afternoon and evening, when residents and visitors gather to walk, take photographs, enjoy the riverside atmosphere and experience the park’s architectural lighting.
The period from around 16:30 to 18:00 is suitable for enjoying the changing light around sunset. From approximately 19:00 to 22:00, the illuminated canopy and surrounding public spaces create a different atmosphere, making the area popular for evening walks and photography.
The park’s location also makes it convenient to combine with several nearby attractions. The Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture is close by, while Dragon Bridge, the Love Bridge, the Carp-to-Dragon statue and Bach Dang riverside promenade can all be incorporated into the same sightseeing route.
On Saturday and Sunday evenings, visitors can also walk toward Dragon Bridge to watch its famous fire and water performance, scheduled at 21:00.
Today, APEC Sculpture Park represents an important meeting point between international cultural exchange and Da Nang’s contemporary urban identity. Its sculptures tell stories of connection across the Asia-Pacific, while the soaring canopy and open riverside spaces reflect the city’s continuing transformation.
For travelers exploring Da Nang, the park offers an easy and enjoyable stop where art, architecture, public space and the Han River landscape come together in a distinctly modern expression of the city.
